So umm yeah. I was talking to good ol' Bob Derrenbacker about some things that came up in Romans class yesterday. Basically, a long story short (which I might fill out later), I'm not sure if Tom Wright has fully explained the role of David within New Testament theology. Yes, Messianic expectations looked for the return of the reign of God, a king, and the land like under David. But Wright does not fill this out with explaining why EVERY Jew looked back to David's reign as the pinnacle of their history.
Instead Wright's theology as cross centered. That means Abraham, the Law, etc all look towards the cross as the ultimate answer to sin and retribution and all that other stuff. But how does David's kingdom/reign play into that? If he was the pinnacle, and God blessed him and the kingdom, then can we not say that at least under his reign (and possibly under Solomon's) that Israel realized the blessings of the covenant? So how can the covenant blessings only come from Christ? Certainly the situation in Israel had changed for the worse in the 5-600 years between David and Jesus, but does that mean that we can't say anything good about David's reign? In less words, I was told to "explore it further". For those who don't know good Academic language, it translates into roughly "Write a paper on it".
So a new paper topic I have before me is about the role of the Davidic kingdom in Messianic hopes or how Tom Wright has misunderstood the role of the Davidic kingdom in 1st Century Judaism. And before someone cries out "You're criticizing Wight?!?!", well yes, and my justification is that I've read him and pretty sure I understand him.
